Hygge (pronounced hue-guh) is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary, as cosy, charming, or special. It is not something that is going to cost the Earth, or something that can be sold to you, but rather a conscious appreciation of the little things in life that make you happy. Everyones ideas of hygge will be different but it's what makes YOU feel comfortable or cosy whether it's lighting a candle, spending time with friends, or making something new.
To learn from our Danish friends and to help you get started in adding more hygge in your lives we have put together some of our own thoughts.
A SIMPLE COMFORT BLANKET
Everyone's best friend is their bed, it is the epitome of comfort but its not always possible to spend all day cocooned in your duvet. Even science says the weight of a blanket can help reduce stress and anxiety, leaving a sense of calm. So always invest in a blanket you love whether it's thick, chunky, furry, knitted - whatever you love (see some ideas below) and curl up on the sofa or have it over your lap in the office. For added hygge we suggest stocking up on chocolate and watching a favourite film.
LIGHT A CANDLE
We see it in nearly every movie or tv show - you know the scene - actors take a relaxing bath or have a night in and there are always flickering candles everywhere! We know that something as simple as a candle can immediately change the mood of a room. They are associated with romance and cosiness and we can't get enough of them. So get out that candle you bought ages ago, the one that’s gathering dust, or why not treat yourself to your favourite scent. Have one, have ten (just remember they are a fire risk and having your curtains alight is just the opposite of hygge). Sit back, relax and breathe in the aroma. For serious relaxing chose calmer fragrances like lavender, clean cotton or vanilla.
SPEND TIME WITH YOUR FRIENDS
Most people have one. That one person who no matter what, will make you smile, that one person you never get tired of, no matter how much time you spend together. When you want to spend time with them then they are bound to be thinking to same thing. So catch up with an old friend over coffee, (or wine), head out for a night on the town, or stay in for a movie night together. They are your true friends because you can be your weirdest self around them and it just feels normal, so pick up the phone, send that text, visit their house.
HAVE A SOAK
As we mentioned earlier, there is nothing more comforting than a relaxing hot soak in a bubble bath. This one is for guys and gals there's no shame! Pick your favourite bubble bath or dig out the expensive bottle you were saving for a special occasion, its time this unsung comfort became a regular. So set that tap running and relax those muscles!
This one is as old as time. No matter the situation the common solution is to get some fresh air. Just being outside can have such a positive affect on your mood whether you choose to go wandering through forests, running on the beach or taking a stroll around the local park. Soaking in the sun and crisp air will make you feel amazing.
Please Note: this one is weather permitting so if its horrible outside we suggest you go back to your blanket.
